Two guides for the Big Island, on opposite coasts. Hilo, on the rainy east side and the island’s largest town, gets a long list of free and low-cost things to do, from Rainbow Falls to Liliuokalani Park and Gardens. Honl’s Beach is on the Kona side, in Kailua-Kona: a small surf and snorkel spot close to town.
The two towns are a long drive apart, so most visitors base themselves on one side and treat the other as a day trip. Hilo is also home to the Merrie Monarch hula festival each spring.
