Beaches

Snorkel spots, secret coves, turtle beaches and the boardwalk towns that grew up around them.

Eleven beach guides, and they are not all the same kind of beach. Lanikai and Anini are calm-water snorkel spots behind a reef. Laniakea, on the North Shore of Oahu, is about the green sea turtles that haul out on the sand and how to watch them without crowding them. Kauapea, the one most people call Secret Beach, is reached on foot and is no place to swim when the winter surf is up. Papohaku on Molokai is mostly about space.

The mainland entries are a different animal: Myrtle Beach and its Broadway at the Beach complex, Pismo Beach on the California coast, and Corey Beach on Long Island. Before any swim in Hawaii, check the ocean conditions for that day. Several of these beaches have no lifeguard.
